The short answer
The Egyptian Bachaloria total is out of 600 marks. Each subject is out of 100: four subjects in the second secondary year (400 marks) and two in the third (200 marks). The first year is a preparatory year whose marks do not count, and religious education is pass-or-fail and is not added.
Second secondary year: 400 marks
Three core subjects on every track, each out of 100:
- Arabic
- The first foreign language
- History
And one specialised subject out of 100, chosen from two according to your track:
- Medicine and Life Sciences: Mathematics or Physics
- Engineering and Computer Science: Chemistry or Programming and AI
- Business: Accounting or Business Administration
- Arts and Humanities: Psychology or a second foreign language
Third secondary year: 200 marks
Two specialised subjects per track, each out of 100:
- Medicine and Life Sciences: Biology (advanced) and Chemistry (advanced)
- Engineering and Computer Science: Mathematics (advanced) and Physics (advanced)
- Business: Economics (advanced) and Mathematics
- Arts and Humanities: Geography (advanced) and Statistics
What does not count
- The first secondary year: the preparatory year; its marks do not count towards the Bachaloria certificate.
- Religious education: a core subject on every track, not added to the total; you need at least 70% to pass.
Your best mark is the one that counts
Each year has two exam sittings: the first compulsory and free (May for the second year, June for the third), the second optional at 200 EGP per subject (July for the second year, August for the third). If you sit a subject twice, your highest mark across all attempts counts.
To sit the exam at all, you must have completed at least 60% of the weekly and monthly assignments and assessments in each subject.
A worked example
An Engineering and Computer Science student who chose Programming in the second year:
- Second year: Arabic 90 + first foreign language 85 + History 80 + Programming 95 = 350
- Third year: advanced Mathematics 90 + advanced Physics 88 = 178
- Total: 350 + 178 = 528 out of 600, which is 88%
