One system, three years
The New Egyptian Bachaloria (البكالوريا المصرية) is a secondary-school system that began in 2025/26 as an optional path alongside Thanaweya Amma — not a replacement for it; students choose between the two after preparatory school. The first year is a preparatory year common to everyone, and its marks do not count towards the total. From the second year a student picks a track and the subjects follow it. The total — 600 marks — is built up across the second and third years rather than in one final exam, and every exam has a second sitting, with your best mark counted.
The four tracks
- Medicine and Life Sciences — Mathematics or Physics in the second year; Biology and Chemistry (advanced) in the third.
- Engineering and Computer Science — Chemistry or Programming and AI in the second year; Mathematics and Physics (advanced) in the third.
- Business — Accounting or Business Administration in the second year; Economics (advanced) and Mathematics in the third.
- Arts and Humanities — Psychology or a second foreign language in the second year; Geography (advanced) and Statistics in the third.
The second-year core subjects — Arabic, the first foreign language and History — are on every track. Religious education is core for every student but is not added to the total (the pass mark is 70%).
What this means for studying
Because second- and third-year marks add up, and because you must complete 60% of each subject's weekly and monthly assessments to sit the exam, keeping up from the start of the year matters. Watching a lesson the week it is taught, doing the homework and sitting the term exam is the whole method.
