History in the Bachaloria: 100 marks on every track

History is a common second-year Bachaloria subject on all four tracks, and its mark out of 100 counts towards the 600 total. How to study it for the new exam (50% essay), and how to choose your teacher.

The short answer

History is a common second-year Bachaloria subject: every student on all four tracks takes it, and its mark out of 100 counts towards the 600 total. That makes it one sixth of your total whatever your track.

Why it matters

  • It is common to every track, even Medicine and Engineering.
  • It is an essay subject by nature: "explain", "compare" and "give reasons" are the heart of the essay half.
  • Science-track students tend to underestimate it, which is exactly why it makes a difference to the total.

The exam

  • Two sittings: May and July, and the best counts. Details
  • 50% multiple-choice and 50% essay. How to prepare
  • You need 60% of the assessments to sit the first attempt. The rule

How to study it

  1. Understand cause and effect before dates. Why did it happen, and what did it lead to?
  2. Make a timeline for each unit.
  3. Write an essay answer to a "give reasons" question every week.
  4. Use the map: places make events stick.
