The Egyptian Bachaloria from idea to first graduates: a timeline

From Parliament's approval in July 2025, to the law in August, the first cohort in first secondary, the international memorandum, the August 2026 decisions, and the first university coordination in 2028.

The timeline

  • January 2025: the ministry sets out the proposed system, its tracks and the faculties linked to each.
  • 7 July 2025: Parliament approves the Bachaloria in the Education Law, as an optional system.
  • 16 July 2025: the minister says it is "a new path, not a replacement for Thanaweya Amma".
  • 13 August 2025: Law 169 of 2025 is issued. Its key points
  • September 2025: the first cohort starts the first Bachaloria year, with Programming & AI on the Qureo platform.
  • 23 December 2025: the minister announces that 92% of first-year students (about 752,000) chose the Bachaloria.
  • 2 February 2026: a memorandum with the International Baccalaureate Organization on the way to international accreditation.
  • May 2026: the minister: 95% of students chose the Bachaloria.
  • 17 August 2026: the minister's decisions on study and exams: a 600 total, two sittings, the 60% assessment rule, and 50% essay questions.
  • August 2026: the official second-year curricula are announced for every track.
  • September 2026: the first cohort starts the second year, the first year that counts towards the total.

Coming up

  • May and July 2027: the first second-year exams. The dates

Future dates follow the announced system; the exact dates are set by the ministry.
