First secondary Programming & AI curriculum: 13 units and Qureo

The short answer

Programming & AI in first secondary is a subject for every student, in both the Bachaloria and Thanaweya Amma. It is outside the total: pass or fail, with 50 out of 100 to pass, taught four lessons a week. It has a theory part in the ministry's book and a practical part on the Japanese Qureo platform.

The book: 13 units

The ministry's book "Programming & AI: Introduction to Information and Communication Technology" (2025/26 edition) covers:

What is information? Data, information and knowledge; media; and information ethics.
Laws and rights in the information society: personal data, privacy and image rights.
Information security: threats and how to counter them, digital signatures and SSL/TLS.
IT and society: how it developed and how it changed our lives.
Communication: how the means of communication developed.
Information design: analogue and digital, digitising sound and images, and video compression.
Computers: how a computer is built.
Networks: computer networks, email, and data transfer speed.
Databases: their types, and relational databases.
Data analysis: data types and analysing them.
Simulation: modelling, simulation with spreadsheets, and queues.
Programming: algorithms, control structures, programming languages and variables.
Generative AI.

The practical part: Qureo

Practice and practical exams take place on the Qureo platform. In the second term of 2026 the practical exam was held on it over three days by governorate, and the questions were 10% recall, 25% understanding, 30% application and 35% problem-solving.

If it is outside the total, why care?

You must pass it: 50 out of 100.
It is the foundation for the second year: if you go on to the Engineering and Computer Science track and choose Programming, the first year is what you build on. See the second-year curriculum.
It tells you what to choose: if you enjoy it, that is a sign Programming in the second year will suit you.
