Egyptian Bachaloria glossary: every term explained

Track, specialised subject, advanced level, preparatory year, first sitting, assessments, coordination. Every Egyptian Bachaloria term in one simple sentence, in Arabic and English.

The terms

  • Egyptian Bachaloria: an optional, free three-year secondary system, an optional alternative alongside Thanaweya Amma. What is it?
  • Preparatory year: the first year of secondary. Shared by every student, and its marks do not count towards the total. Details
  • Track: the specialisation you choose in the second year. Four tracks: Medicine and Life Sciences, Engineering and Computer Science, Business, Arts and Humanities. The tracks
  • Common subjects: Arabic, the first foreign language and History in the second year, for every track.
  • Specialised subject: the subject you choose from two in the second year according to your track, and the two third-year subjects.
  • Advanced level: the third-year subjects, with deeper topics than the second year.
  • Total: 600 marks: 400 from the second year and 200 from the third. The calculation
  • Pass-or-fail subject: a subject you must pass that does not count towards the total, such as Religious Education (70%).
  • Activity subject: neither pass-or-fail nor in the total, such as Financial Culture.
  • First sitting: the first exam of the year (May for the second year, June for the third). Compulsory and free.
  • Second sitting: an optional exam (July for the second year, August for the third) at 200 EGP per subject. Details
  • Best mark: of the two sittings, the one that counts towards the total.
  • Assessments: 100 marks per subject: a project, weekly assessments, homework and participation, behaviour and attendance, and two monthly assessments.
